What is a Used Car Check?

The Used Car Check is an independent, professional pre-purchase inspection before you commit to buying a used vehicle. As a TÜV NORD Partner and certified car appraiser, I inspect your chosen vehicle for you — either directly at the seller's location (private or dealer), at a neutral workshop, or on-site at your location in Erlangen, Nuremberg, Fürth, Bamberg, Forchheim, Bayreuth or Herzogenaurach.

The goal is an objective assessment of substance, technology and price. You receive a written report with all findings, a realistic price assessment and a clear recommendation: buy, renegotiate or walk away from the purchase.

Why an independent check?

For most people, a used car purchase is the second-largest investment after property — and at the same time the area in which the fewest buyers can really judge what they are getting. In a private sale, the principle of "sold as seen" generally applies — claims for defects are practically excluded after contract signing, unless wilful deception can be proven. With a dealer purchase, the statutory warranty does apply, but for used cars it can be shortened to 1 year and is often difficult to enforce in practice.

Insurers also like to reduce settlements if prior damage is discovered after a claim. A professional check before purchase significantly reduces this risk — and costs a fraction of what a later repair or legal dispute would cause.

Important: Even a "full service history" vehicle from a dealer can have been accident-repaired, show odometer tampering or carry hidden defects. Only an independent visual inspection with measuring equipment reliably reveals such issues.

What is checked during the Used Car Check?

A full check covers around 90 inspection points over approximately 60 to 90 minutes. In detail, we inspect:

  • Visual inspection inside and outside — bodywork, paint, glass, body parts, seats, dashboard, controls
  • Paint thickness measurement using a digital gauge — reliably reveals repainted areas, filler work and prior damage
  • Bodywork check — panel gaps, corrosion (including hidden areas on the underbody, sills, wheel arches, strut mounts), accident traces, weld seams
  • Engine bay visual inspection — oil leaks, coolant, belt drives, exhaust system, plausibility of components
  • OBD diagnostics with professional diagnostic equipment — fault memory, service intervals, plausibility check of the mileage shown (odometer tampering), readout of all installed control units
  • Brake system — pads, discs, lines, function
  • Tyres and wheels — tread depth, age (DOT number), even wear (indicator of chassis or axle damage), wheel damage
  • Suspension and steering — shock absorbers, springs, bushings, tie rods, axle geometry plausibility
  • Safety systems — airbag, ABS, ESP, emergency brake assist, lane-keep assist (where fitted)
  • Test drive — engine running, gear-shifting behaviour, braking behaviour, chassis noises, comfort systems; ideally with the seller present
  • Interior check — seat upholstery, covers, steering-wheel wear as an indicator of actual mileage, residual upholstery value
  • Vehicle documents check — match between keeper / vehicle registration / advert, valid roadworthiness inspection (TÜV), complete service book, number of previous keepers

How does the Used Car Check work?

The process is intentionally straightforward:

  1. You send us the advert (mobile.de, autoscout24, kleinanzeigen or a direct dealer offer). We check plausibility and market price in advance.
  2. We coordinate the appointment with the seller — typically 60 to 90 minutes on-site at the vehicle. You can come along or send us as your representative.
  3. On-site inspection — visual inspection, use of measuring equipment (paint thickness, OBD), test drive, photo documentation of every relevant point.
  4. Written report — you usually receive a PDF report the same day with findings, photo documentation and a concrete negotiation recommendation: "buy", "buy but negotiate the price down by €X", "have the following defects rectified before purchase" or "clear recommendation against buying".
  5. Optional: negotiation support — on request we accompany you to the seller and help you build the specific argument based on the documented findings.

What does the Used Car Check cost?

We work exclusively with transparent fixed prices — no hidden surcharges, no hourly billing:

  • In the Erlangen area (up to approx. 20 km): from €149 net
  • On-site appointments up to 50 km (Nuremberg, Fürth, Forchheim, Herzogenaurach): from €199 net
  • On-site appointments 50 to 100 km (Bamberg, Bayreuth, Ansbach): from €249 net
  • Multiple vehicles at the same appointment or negotiation support: on request

If our clear recommendation is "no, don't buy", you often save many times the cost of the check — and avoid repair costs that quickly run into four- or five-figure sums. A successful price negotiation based on documented findings typically pays for the check at the very first appointment.
