What is a vehicle valuation?

A vehicle valuation — also referred to as a market value appraisal or car valuation — is the independent, written assessment of your vehicle by a qualified car appraiser. As a TÜV NORD Partner based in Erlangen, I determine the real market value, the replacement value and — where relevant — the dealer purchase value and residual value of your vehicle, applying the recognised industry standards of DAT and Schwacke.

A vehicle valuation is much more than the quick online guess of a price portal. It accounts for the individual condition, optional equipment, prior damage, service history, mileage, regional market conditions and the unique characteristics of your vehicle. The result is court-proof, accepted by authorities and the only reliable evidence in any decision of real financial weight.

Common reasons for a vehicle valuation in Erlangen

The typical situations in which clients in Erlangen, Nuremberg, Fürth and the surrounding area commission a valuation include:

Private sale

You'd like to sell your vehicle privately and need a realistic, defensible price — neither too high (no buyer responds) nor too low (you give money away). With a vehicle valuation, you have an objective, market-based asking price that you can substantiate transparently to interested buyers.

Vehicle purchase — certainty before signing

Before buying a used vehicle, an independent expert inspection is well worth it. I appraise the prospective vehicle for prior damage, technical defects and the correct market price — whether from a private seller or from a dealer anywhere in the region between Erlangen, Nuremberg, Fürth, Bamberg, Forchheim and Bayreuth.

Inheritance & estate

In an inheritance case, the vehicle's value must be documented for the estate distribution, the asset inventory or the tax office. A court-proof vehicle valuation creates clarity between co-heirs — particularly with classic cars, collector vehicles or premium models.

Divorce & equalisation of accrued gains

When equalising marital gains in divorce proceedings, a neutral and defensible vehicle valuation forms the basis for a fair division. Both the family court and the lawyers on each side accept my appraisal as an independent foundation for valuation.

Leasing return

When returning a leased vehicle, leasing companies often raise inflated claims for damage and depreciation. A pre-prepared valuation documents the actual condition and protects you from unjustified follow-up demands — particularly with premium vehicles from the Erlangen and Herzogenaurach area.

Tax office & fiscal valuation

When transferring a vehicle into private ownership, on business cessation, gifting or inheritance, the tax office requires a market-based valuation figure. An expert appraisal is the cleanest possible evidence here.

Market value, replacement value, dealer purchase value — what's the difference?

Market value

The market value is the price you would achieve in a normal sale on the open market — between private individuals, without time pressure, over a realistic marketing period. It sits between the dealer purchase value and the dealer sale value, and is the reference figure for most private matters.

Replacement value

The replacement value (Wiederbeschaffungswert) is the sum you would need to spend to source an equivalent vehicle — same model, same year of manufacture, comparable mileage and equipment — on the regional market. It is the central reference figure in claims and insurance law.

Dealer purchase value

The dealer purchase value is the price at which a car dealer would buy your vehicle. It typically sits 10–20 % below the market value because the dealer must factor in warranty provisions, reconditioning and margin. This figure is most relevant for trade-ins or quick sales.

Residual value

The residual value describes the value of a damaged or repair-needing vehicle in its current state — for instance after a total loss or in an uneconomic repair scenario. Where relevant, this value is also documented in the appraisal.

Rule of thumb: Dealer purchase value < Market value < Replacement value < Dealer sale value. Which figure is right for your purpose we clarify transparently before accepting the assignment.

Methodology — how I value

My valuation is built on a combination of:

  • Professional DAT valuation (Deutsche Automobil Treuhand) — the industry benchmark
  • Schwacke list for cross-comparison and market observation
  • Current market research on the relevant sales platforms (mobile.de, AutoScout24)
  • Personal visual inspection covering paint, body, interior and technical condition
  • Verification of the vehicle history — service, prior damage, MOT (HU/AU)
  • Assessment of optional equipment and any value-enhancing features

The process — from appointment to finished report

  1. Enquiry: Contact me by phone or email with details of the vehicle and the purpose. I quote a transparent fixed price right away.
  2. On-site appointment: I appraise your vehicle in person — in Erlangen, Nuremberg, Fürth, Bamberg or at your home. Duration approximately 45–90 minutes.
  3. Documentation: Extensive photo documentation, a test drive where appropriate, reading of service data.
  4. Analysis & market comparison: Cross-reference with current listings and recent sales of comparable vehicles.
  5. Finished report: Delivery within 3–5 working days digitally, and in multiple printed copies on request.
